Anticipation

With this strategy, the teacher selects a game students will play during class. However, before gameplay begins, students get several questions they must answer during or after gameplay to activate their prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic or instructional concepts. Teachers can format these questions as multiple choice, true or false, or fill in the blank—any format conducive to quick, short-form responses works well. Teachers allow players to engage in gameplay with little to no interference. After they are finished with the game, students come back together as a class to revisit the anticipation questions.

Mission US: A Cheyenne Odyssey (www.mission-us.org/pages/mission-3) is a role-playing game in which players take on the role of Little Fox, a young Cheyenne boy in the 19th century. As Little Fox, players are immersed in a historical simulation rich in logical reasoning, investigation, and multiculturalism. Before players begin, teachers pose anticipatory guiding questions, such as the following three (Schaaf, 2015).

1.Are the Cheyenne children similar to you? Yes or No

2.Little Fox belongs to the Northern Cheyenne tribe. True or False

3.Select the setting the Cheyenne tribe called home. Mountains, Plains, or Desert

Once students have played the game, they revisit their original responses. These short-form questions lead the class into a deeper discussion about the game and its content.
